Blastr, without running it yourself

blastr popularised the idea of a nostr relay that forwards your events to every known relay. blaastr is the hosted version: a live, self-cleaning relay list, your own outbox relays included, and a report of what each relay did with each event.

What blastr is

blastr is a proxy relay: it accepts EVENT messages and publishes them onward to a large list of relays, but stores nothing itself. The original project from Mutiny ran on Cloudflare Workers with a fixed list of popular relays. Personal relays such as HAVEN offer a similar blastr option for your outbox.

How blaastr differs

  • Live relay list: relays are added as they come online and skipped while they refuse events, need payment or are unreachable.
  • Your outbox too: the write relays from your NIP-65 relay list always get your events.
  • Per-event receipts: see accepted, rejected and unreachable relays for every broadcast from the last 7 days.
  • Reblast: resend an event to the relays that missed it, including ones that came online since.
  • Scheduling, batches and an HTTP API for apps and bots.
  • Paid per pubkey over lightning, so only subscribers' signed events go out.

Switch in one step

If you used a blastr relay URL before, replace it with wss://blaastr.com in your client's relay list, write only. Subscribe your npub for 21,000 sats a year and you're done.

Questions

Is blaastr a fork of blastr?

No. It's a separate hosted service built around the same idea, with its own relay list, subscriptions and reporting.

Do I still need my own relays?

Yes, for reading. blaastr is write-only. Keep your favourite relays in your list; blaastr makes sure what you write also reaches everyone else's.

Can I self-host instead?

You can run blastr or a personal relay with blasting yourself. blaastr is for people who'd rather pay 21,000 sats a year than maintain a relay list and infrastructure.
